A Little bit of History
It is believed the Inn originated in the 16th century as an inn for travellers. It was used by King James the 2nd and his army of Royalists prior to the battle of Sedgemoor in 1685. King James went to battle against James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, for the Duke was the illegitimate son of the King and felt the crown should be his own.
Whilst The Duke and his West Country rebels readied for battle the King and his army trod across the country and by chance came upon the Vobster Inn, and no doubt took time to enjoy the Inns hospitality.
The Duke lost the battle and after trying to escape to Christchurch in peasants clothes was captured and eventually beheaded for treason at the Tower of London.
